Did you know that “A fifth column is a group of people who clandestinely undermine a larger group, such as a nation, from within, to the aid of an external enemy.” (wikipedia)
Apparently the term is not unique to the V series and it goes back to 1936 to the Spanish Civil War. It was the term for a resistance group in Madrid Spain. Although the resistance group was not very effective the term caught on and was used later in World War II. It looks like it was also used negatively in reference to coraling Germans in the UK and placing them in internment camps.
This is also interesting and probably where Kenneth Johnson the creator of the original series got the term from. It has been mentioned many times that the V series was an allegory for Nazi Germany. Therefore it would make sense that in his research he learned of the “5th column” and used it in the series.
I thought it was interesting because I didn’t know the 5th column dated back to World War II and the Spanish Civil War.
Cool right?
Here are some more 5th column web sites I found in my research.
